Prologue
Feet pounding, heart racing, breath gasping, the chase went on. Weaving between trees, ducking between branches, running for fear, running from death. A black shape moved through the darkness, panting hard, looking behind him. All he saw behind the darkness were teeth. Huge, slavering jaws, just waiting to take a bite out of him. It was a cat. The chase was wearing him down, as whatever was chasing him growled and barked. It was a wolf. A big, gray, wolf. It's eyes were glinting yellow in the gathering darkness. The cat's tail streamed out behind him, bushing up in a sign of fear. The wolf got closer, closer, and ever closer still. The cat knew he was gone. He let out a yowl; a scream of fear as the wolf caught up with him.
"No- no- no! This... This can't happen! I haven't been here that long. I can't die! Not yet!" the cat screamed as the wolf caught him in its jaws, lifting him up in the air, and carrying him off. One last yowl of pain came from the cat, and then it went limp.
In the shadows of the nearby forest, two green eyes glinted out, looking at the retreating wolf. It let out a purr of satisfaction, and disappeared into the bushes, all that was seen was his dark ginger tail. With one final growl, the wolf left the cat, and tore of through the forest.
"Wh-What happened here?" a cat stopped in front of the mangled body, "What happened to him?"
The brown cat stood, shocked, at the cat's paws. Watching the last life bleed out of him. Looking at the scars, bite wounds, and all the blood seeping out of the black cat that had run for his life. It scared him, and the brown cat knew that it was a sight he would never forget. He turned, and ran. Ran from whatever had killed the brave warrior, ran back to safety; wherever it was.
Chapter 1
"Rainpaw," a voice came, "Rainpaw, get out here! We have training to do, or have you forgotten?"
Rainpaw sighed heavily, and heaved herself to her black paws, her ice blue eyes clouded with sleepiness, as she listened to her mentor, Featherstorm, yell at her from outside the apprentice's den.
